Getting Through That Career Funk
I’M BACK.
Yes, I know, I’ve SUPER MIA, but that’s mainly due to this announcement…
*drumroll*
Excited to announce my career shift back into fashion!
FINALLY.
In the recent months, I’ve felt like I’ve gone through a period of *cue Kylie Jenner’s voice* realizing things…
and I feel like career stumps for the average twenty-something year old isn’t addressed enough. You know, the “WTF am I doing and why am I doing this?” feeling? You’re not alone.
I feel like it’s pretty common to be unsure about what direction your career is going in your twenties and have that fear of it being too late to try something else or the fear of it not working out.
Ask yourself this: Am I happy in this environment? What about my job or career is putting me in this funk? Can picture myself doing this for the rest of my life?
In college, around the time I started my blog, I started working in fashion. I was always inspired and motivated because I actually found a job I liked that coincided with my hobby. I found myself constantly working between a part-time job at a high-end boutique and an internship at a fashion PR agency in Beverly Hills. I was constantly busy and loving every minute of it.
After college, I decided to explore other options in marketing and communications, since I had my degree in that and found my first full-time job at a holistic medical practice. As it turns out, the medical field is not my passion and it took working in it for a year to realize I had to be doing something I was passionate about because I literally felt like I was wasting away. Going back to working in fashion, I feel more motivated. I love what I do and I have even more inspiration for my blog. When your career and your passion coincide, there’s not much to complain about. It’s true when they say, if you do what you love you’ll never work a day in your life.
Now, the reason for the post is because I feel like this feeling is common. You know, the feeling of not reaching your full potential or purpose. That awkward point where you realize you’re not doing what you love and you can’t picture yourself doing this for the rest of your life. You don’t know what to do. You feel super stuck and it SUCKS because no one talks about it. You feel overwhelmed, stressed, somehow bored with what you’re doing and anxious about what to do next all at the same time.
It’s OK to feel stuck. In fact, as much as it was an uncomfortable period for me, I realized this was my opportunity to decide where I want my career to truly go. If you find yourself stuck in a field you’re not passionate about or an environment you can’t see yourself a part of, it’s time to decide. Here’s how to get out:
- Network. People are the best resources. Make it a point to keep in touch.
- Try harder. Even if you don’t enjoy what you’re doing, you won’t regret the hard work you put it. It always pays off.
- Stay positive. As hard as it is feeling stuck, stray from saying “I hate my job”. Once you say it, it really manifests. Eventually, you’ll move on from it anyways so why not try to make it as enjoyable as possible.
- Have a support system. When I found myself in a funk for a few months, I was stressed all the time and anxious. Having a support system to lift you up gives you hope when you’ve been mentally burned out.
Hope this helps anyone who’s been feeling that career funk. You’re not alone. There’s still time so make your time worthwhile.
